🍷Port Wine’s Protected Home
Only wine produced in Portugal’s Douro Valley can be officially called “Port.” The region was the world’s first demarcated wine region, dating back to 1756.
📚 The Oldest Bookstore Ever
Lisbon is home to Livraria Bertrand, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest operating bookstore (opened in 1732). Book lovers have been wandering its shelves for nearly 300 years!
🌉 Europe’s Longest Bridge
Lisbon’s Vasco da Gama Bridge stretches an incredible 17.2 km (10.7 miles) across the Tagus River, making it Europe’s longest bridge.
🌍 The “End of the World”
Before the Age of Discoveries, Europeans believed Sagres and nearby Cabo de São Vicente (Cape St. Vincent) were literally the end of the known world beyond it lay only monsters and endless ocean.
🍒 Cheers to Cherry Shots
In Lisbon, you’ll find tiny street bars serving ginjinha, a cherry liqueur often enjoyed as a quick shot. Some even serve it in chocolate cups!

Portugal produces over 50% of the world’s cork, and you’ll see it everywhere from wine bottles to handbags to even surfboards. Cork oak trees are so protected that cutting one down without permission can get you in legal trouble.
